CK to the Power of Young People Public Art Project

The CK to the Power of Young People (CKY) Advisory Group, an initiative that works with local young people (aged 15-39) and organizations to increase attraction, engagement, and retention outcomes of residents in this age group is teaming up with Mayor Darrin Canniff to create a unique piece of public art. Funds for the project will be donated by Mayor Canniff through the generous contribution of funds from Hydro One through the Ward Councillor Grant Program.

"We are excited to work with the youth of our community on this project," said Mayor Darrin Canniff. "This public art piece will be a great addition to our community and will provide an opportunity for our young residents to get involved in the arts and express their creativity."

The youth will work with an artist facilitator to develop themes for the piece, which will then be used to request design concepts in a call to artists using Let’s Talk Chatham-Kent. The designs will be reviewed by CK to the Power of Y committee, narrowed down, and put out for voting by the youth of our community.

"We are thrilled to be working on this exciting project," said Victoria Bodnar, Manager of Community Attraction and Promotion which supports the CKY initiative. "This public art piece will provide an opportunity for young people to get involved in the arts and showcase their perspectives of life in Chatham-Kent through the art’s design. We are excited to see what they come up with."

"We are honoured to be part of this project and to have the opportunity to work with the Municipality and other young people in CK," said CKY Advisory Group Co-chair, Jason Brown.

CKY Co-Chair Megan Siddall adds, "We are excited to see what the artist creates from the feedback, and to have the chance to contribute to the development of a unique piece of public art in Chatham-Kent."

Design on the public art piece is expected to begin in 2023. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project from CKY (@CKYAdvisory) socials.
