The Riverview Gardens Family Council announces the recipient of the 2023 Norm Lachapelle Award for Volunteerism is Phil McCracken.
The Norm Lachapelle Award for Volunteerism was created in 2019 by the Riverview Gardens Family Council in honour of fellow member, friend, and long-time volunteer Norm Lachapelle, who passed away suddenly in 2018.
“Phil is a Smart Serve certified bartender who tends bar for Riverview Gardens. He spends most of his Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at the Riverview Gardens Pub. Phil started volunteering in 2016 and has volunteered over 450 hours during this time. Phil goes above and beyond to be welcoming and friendly to everyone he encounters, and he makes our Pub hour a very enjoyable time for our Residents. He engages everyone as they arrive and makes sure the regulars have their “usual” in a very timely fashion. Phil then converses with everyone and plays a little music. He is reliable, dependable, and consistent. He can be counted on to attend when scheduled and is always willing to come in whenever needed. Phil brings a little bit of “Cheers” to Riverview Gardens every time he tends bar.” Said Janice Ward, Co-Chair of the Riverview Gardens Family Council.
“December 3rd marked the 5-year anniversary of Norm’s passing. To Norm, volunteering became his second career. It's important to recognize that so many volunteers are following in his footsteps. It's heartwarming to know that Norm's devotion to helping others continues to flourish in the hearts of the volunteers, especially Phil, who so generously continues to give his time, energy, and love to the residents of Riverview Gardens.” Said Linda Lachapelle, Norm’s wife.
“I didn’t start volunteering to receive awards, but I appreciate this honour.” Phil McCracken said.
Volunteers enhance residents’ quality of life. Volunteer activities include visiting, meal assistance, bartending, and portering for spiritual services and the hair salon.
