On May 27th, 2024 Chatham-Kent Council requested that Administration draft a by-law for a pilot program to permit the keeping of hens on rural residential and village residential properties.
Administration has prepared a draft Backyard Chickens By-law. Prior to Council’s consideration, the public will have two opportunities to provide input:
- An online Let’s Talk Chatham-Kent page and survey will be available until September 19th at letstalkchatham-kent.ca/backyard-chickens-by-law
- On September 19th, an in-person public engagement session will be held at the Ken Houston Memorial and Agricultural Centre located at 1212 North St in Dresden at 6:00 pm. This session will be live-streamed on the Municipality’s Facebook page and YouTube channel for those who want to participate at home.
Feedback results from the Let’s Talk Chatham-Kent survey and the public engagement session will be provided to Council with the draft Backyard Chickens By-law in the Fall of 2024.
Note: As per the Chatham-Kent Procedure By-law, section 7.10 (c) - no deputations will be received at the Council meeting when there has been at least one (1) public meeting held at which the public was provided the opportunity to make formal presentations on that subject matter.
