The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is moving forward with a significant new affordable housing development in Wallaceburg following Council approval of the 72-unit project at 199 Westcourt Boulevard.
The new five-storey development marks the first new community housing project built in Wallaceburg in decades and represents another major investment in the future growth and prosperity of both Wallaceburg and Chatham-Kent.
The project will include a mix of one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom units designed to support individuals, seniors, and families. Of the 72 units, 50 will offer affordable and deeply affordable rental rates, helping address the growing demand for housing options across the community.
“This is an exciting and transformational project for Wallaceburg,” said Mayor Darrin Canniff. “Council has made it clear that increasing access to affordable housing is one of our top priorities, and this development is another strong sign that Chatham-Kent continues to grow and invest in its future. Stable, affordable housing creates stronger communities, supports local families, and helps ensure people can continue to build their lives right here in Chatham-Kent.”
The Municipality has successfully secured more than $18.9 million in external funding contributions toward the project through partnerships and grant programs, including support from upper levels of government and housing-focused funding initiatives.
Demand for affordable housing in Chatham-Kent continues to rise, with more than 1,450 households currently on the Municipality’s centralized housing waiting list. Approximately 23 per cent of those households are seeking housing in Wallaceburg specifically.
The development is expected to house between 122 and nearly 200 residents and will provide much-needed relief for individuals and families facing housing instability.
Council approved awarding the construction contract to S.E.M. Construction Limited, with construction expected to begin in July of this year and take approximately two years.
The Wallaceburg development continues the Municipality’s ongoing efforts to expand affordable housing options across Chatham-Kent and support healthy, vibrant and growing communities.
