Who can apply:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Resides in the Municipality of Chatham-Kent or is the owner or tenant of land in Chatham-Kent
  • Excellent customer service and Election Official experience preferred
  • Comfortable with and/or experience using optical scan automated vote counting tabulators
  • Ability to work well both independently and as a team
  • Available to attend required training session up to three weeks prior to Voting Day
Note: Applicants cannot be a candidate or the spouse, sibling, parent, child, grandparent or grandchild of a candidate running in the October 24, 2022 Municipal Election

Time Commitment

  • Training: mandatory in-class training session – approximately 1.5 hours
  • Election day: 8 am to approximately 9 pm

Tabulator Deputy Returning Officer (TDRO)

Special Requirement

  • Must have cell phone and access to a vehicle

Responsibilities and Requirements

  • Must have access to a vehicle to transport election material
  • Assists with setting up and closing of the voting place
  • Receives ballots from voters and feeds ballots into vote tabulator
  • Assists with various duties
  • Must have excellent customer service skills
  • Some physical activity and lifting may be required to set up and dismantle the voting place

Time Commitment

  • Training: mandatory in-class - approximately 2 hours
  • Advance Polls: October 13 (1:00 pm - 7:00 pm), October 14 (9 am - 4 pm), October 15 (9 am - 4 pm) and/or
  • Election day: 8 am to approximately 9 pm

Revision Clerk

Responsibilities and Requirements

  • Assists with setting up, opening and closing of the voting place
  • Processes voters and administers declarations
  • Adds voters or makes changes to the voters' list
  • Must have excellent customer service skills
  • Must be highly organized and a team player
  • Previous election experience an asset

Time Commitment

  • Training: mandatory in-person training session – approximately 2 hours
  • Advance Polls: October 13 (1:00 pm - 7:00 pm), October 14 (9 am - 4 pm), October 15 (9 am - 4 pm) and/or
  • Election Day: 8 am to approximately 9 pm

Deputy Returning Officer (DRO)

Responsibilities and Requirements

  • Assists with setting up, opening and closing of the voting place
  • Processes voters and issues ballots and administers declarations
  • Must have excellent customer service skills
  • Must be highly organized and a team player
  • Previous election experience an asset

  • Training: mandatory in-person  training session – approximately 2 hours

Standby Election Worker

Special Requirement

  • Must have cell phone and access to a vehicle

Responsibilities and Requirements

  • Prepares to be dispatched to fill any voting place position
  • If deployed to fill a voting place position:
    • May process voters and issues ballots and/or administer declarations
    • May add voters or make changes to the voters' list
    • May operate a vote tabulator
  • Must have excellent customer service and problem solving skills
  • Must be highly organized and a team player
  • Previous election experience is considered an asset
  • Some physical activity and lifting may be required to set up and dismantle the voting place

Time Commitment

  • Training: mandatory in-person training session – approximately 3 hours
  • Advance Polls: October 13 (1:00 pm - 7:00 pm), October 14 (9 am - 4 pm), October 15 (9 am - 4 pm)

Site Manager

Special Requirement

  • Must have cell phone and access to a vehicle

Responsibilities and Requirements

  • Ensure the conduct and integrity of the voting process is maintained and assist other Election staff as needed
  • Oversee team at a Polling location
  • Verify supplies received from the Clerk and deliver them to assigned Poll. Distribution to Election Officials will occur at the Poll on day of Voting by Site Manager
  • Must have access to a vehicle to transport election material
  • Responsible for procedures for opening and closing of voting place and returning of materials after closing of Poll 
  • Must have excellent customer service and problem solving skills
  • Have a general understanding of all positions at the Poll to provide relief and assistance when needed
  • Communicate with Clerk and Election Coordinator

  • Election day: 8 am to approximately 9 pm

Mobile Deputy Returning Officer (MDRO)

Special Requirement

  • Must have cell phone and access to a vehicle

Responsibilities and Requirements

  • Works in a two person team setting and attends Institution/Retirement Home Voting Places and acts in a similar function to the DRO and Revision Clerk as described above for the residents of that facility
  • Verify supplies received from the Clerk 
  • Must have access to a vehicle to transport election material
  • Must have excellent customer service skills
  • Must be highly organized and a team player
  • Previous election experience an asset
  • Communicate with Clerk and Election Coordinator

Time Commitment

  • Training: mandatory in-person training session – approximately 2 hours
  • Election day: 8 am to approximately 9 pm

  • Works in a two person team setting and attends predetermined locations set out by the Election Team and acts in a similar function to the DRO and Revision Clerk as described above
  • Verify supplies received from the Clerk 
  • Must have access to a vehicle to transport election material

FAQs

When will Election Employment begin? Applications will be accepted beginning June 13 to July 27. 

How can I apply to be an Election Official? Applicants are encouraged to apply online, however, if required, paper copies of the application are also available at any local Municipal Centre.

How will I be notified if I am a successful applicant? You will be contacted via email, letter or phone call near the end of August. Only successful applicants will be notified.

When will Election Officials be paid? Election Officials will be paid after Election Day (October 24) as soon as possible.

Do I have to have past Election experience to work the Election? Although it is helpful, it is not required.

When will training sessions take place? Training session for successful applicants will be in early October. Once Election Officials are notified that they have been successful, they will be assigned their training session. Any questions regarding Election Official training can be directed to the Election Team.
