The Thai Community in Chatham-Kent began with a small group of Thai migrant workers who arrived before 2006 to work in local greenhouses. In 2006, community members came together to form Thai Volunteer Outreach, a grassroots group dedicated to helping fellow Thai residents navigate life in Canada. From translation support and assistance with government processes to learning English and understanding daily life in Chatham-Kent, the group has played a vital role in helping newcomers settle with confidence.
Today, the Thai community continues to grow and thrive. Members contribute significantly to Chatham-Kent's agricultural sector while maintaining a deep sense of unity, friendship, and cultural pride, helping make the community stronger and more diverse.
Celebrating Tradition: Songkran and Cultural Gatherings
One of the most cherished traditions within Thai culture is Songkran, the Thai New Year. Symbolizing renewal, respect, and family unity, Songkran is a time to pause, reflect, and reconnect. Families gather to show gratitude to elders through Rod Nam Dam Hua—the gentle pouring of water over hands as a sign of cleansing, renewal, and blessing.
