When you apply for a job, you will submit a résumé and cover letter, unless the employer requests otherwise. Then, employers will usually choose a few promising candidates to interview before choosing someone for the job. It is up to you to make the best case for your employment through your résumé, cover letter and interview.
Tips for Your Résumé and Cover Letter
- Create a personal version of your résumé that includes all of your education, work and volunteer experience. When applying for a job, cut out parts that don’t relate to the job you’re applying to, and submit the shortened version.
- Use your cover letter to personally introduce yourself, and to express and explain your interest in the position. Let them know why you would be excellent for the job.
- Your cover letter may reference some experiences on your résumé, but it should provide more details about those experiences and explain why they are relevant to the position you are applying for.
- Proofread your résumé and cover letter for spelling and grammar errors. It's a good idea to have someone else proofread them as well, to catch mistakes that you may have missed.
- Make sure that you follow the job posting’s directions for submitting your application. Include and exclude documents as requested, pay attention to submission deadlines, address your application to the right contact and submit the application through the proper medium (in person, by email, fax or mail).

Tips for Your Interview
- Employers will make decisions based on what they learn about your skills, character, achievements and education. Don’t be shy about speaking highly of yourself. Interviewers want to know why they should hire you.
- Prepare for the interview by listing your strengths for the job, along with specific examples of how you have demonstrated these strength.
- Bring a copy of your résumé and a list of references (professional contacts who can speak highly of you and your work).
- Dress for success. Wear professional attire and groom yourself to look neat and clean.
- After the interview, send the interviewer an email to thank them for taking the time to consider you for the position. It shows your appreciation and keeps you fresh in the employer’s mind.
