Where did you grow up?
Born and raised right here in Wallaceburg.
What was you first job?
My first job while I was still in high school was working at Aar-Kel Moulds in Wallaceburg. Basically doing cleaning and painting.
My first job after during/after college was working as a CNC laser operator as well as draftsman for a company located in Strathroy. From there I moved with my wife to Sarnia to begin working for a company that would see me begin within the QC/Inspection department and ending as the IT / Production Control Manager before my departure.
What is your favourite Chatham-Kent pastime?
Without a doubt some of my favourite past times include getting out and camping with the family and getting out on the water, whether it be boating or fishing. Chatham-Kent has some excellent campgrounds (Rondeau Park as well as Wheatly Provincial Park). With regards to fishing/boating, via the Sydenham in Wallaceburg we are able to travel to some great fishing and swimming spots.
What is your favourite season, and why?
No question my favourite season is summer. The main reason being that many of the activities that my family and I like to take part in are summer activities (motocross, camping, fishing, etc). And the secondary reason being that given the nature of my business, it's much easier to run when it's warm due to how our materials react to differences in temperatures.
Name an experience that has positively motivated you?
An experience that has positively motivated me was seeing and hearing all of the support and kind words I received from friends and family during my transition into turning my dream into a reality. Another experience that has positively motivated me is receiving excellent feedback from our customers regarding the quality of our products, most of which are blown away by how incredibly light they are.
What did you do after high school?
After high school I moved to London where I attended college, which provided me with the necessary tools to obtain an excellent job in Sarnia.
What are you doing now?
I now run my own business which is Legacy Composites Inc, and we are the leading manufacturer of carbon fiber hard hats and welding helmets. We have also developed the first & only CSA compliant carbon fiber hard hat (testing which was carried out by an accredited lab). Our products are not only incredibly strong, but also incredibly light (up to 40% lighter than some plastic and fiberglass alternatives). Our specialty is developing high quality products using carbon fiber and we are currently in the process of branching out into some new exciting markets.
What is your #1 reason for choosing Chatham-Kent as "home"?
To be honest I had always hoped I would have the chance to move back this way. I loved growing up in this community and very much wanted to raise my family here. After talks with my wife, we decided we wanted to start pursuing the idea of moving back to Wallaceburg, which also meant finding a spot to relocate my business into. What made this transition much easier was the excellent help and guidance I received from Stuart McFadden and the Chatham-Kent Economic Development Services. They put me in touch with a local individual who had commercial space available which was exactly what I was looking for and he too has been a pleasure to work with. In the end I moved my business here, and my family into a great neighbourhood in Wallaceburg and couldn't be happier. I especially love the fact that my son now attends the very same public school I did while growing up.
