Accidents happen. If you or someone you are driving with is in a car accident, call the police and the insurance company. If it is a life-threatening accident, call 9.1.1.

If you are in an accident:

Write down the following information from the other driver:

  • Name of vehicle insurance company and policy number
  • Driver’s name, address and phone number
  • Make and model of their car
  • Where/How the accident happened
Then, be sure to:

  • Write down the names and phone numbers of any witnesses
  • Call the police and make a statement

If you are stopped by the police:

If you are stopped by the police while in your car, here are some tips:

  • You have the legal right not to answer any questions
  • Ask the police officer if there is a reason for stopping you
  • You must show your driver’s license, car registration and insurance
  • If the police believe that you have alcohol, weapons, illegal drugs or stolen property, they have the right to search you and your car
