A second-generation, family-owned business, Postma Heating & Cooling has offered plumbing, air conditioning, heating, and electrical repairs for Chatham-Kent residents since 1989. "I grew up in Blenheim and went to trade school in Hamilton. My wife and I both lived and worked in Hamilton. We were building our life in the city. Work got slow in Hamilton so we came back to Chatham and thought it would be temporary. Within a few weeks we decided we're not going back. We know Chatham is where it is at - our family is here, this is where we grew up and this is where we're going to stay to raise our kids.

At Postma Heating and Cooling, we offer professional development opportunities, monetary and non–monetary benefits, skills upgrading, leadership development, and career advancement for employees. We have memberships to various networking groups that share training resources and opportunities. Our leadership team gets coaching from industry mentors on a routine basis. There is vendor/product training, and an approved training partner with Infrastructure Health & Safety Association (IHSA), a recognized non-profit training provider for Ontario, that allows us to train working at heights in-house. At our Chatham location, there is a skills lab to help develop new hires and providing ongoing training for experienced tradesmen.
Currently, Postma Heating and Cooling employs 80 people in Chatham-Kent and are striving to employ 100 local team members. The company is looking for plumbers, gasfitters, sheet metal, electricians, estimators, project managers, and sales representatives. We have opened a second location in Wallaceburg to allow us to better serve that community and surrounding area.
Postma Heating and Cooling enrolls 3- 4 co-op students per semester. Previous co-op students now have permanent employment at the company. There are several different career explorations that can be taken with a co-op placement which includes roles in the office, sales, warehouse, accounting, administrative, and trades such as plumbing and electrical.
Additionally, apprentices are hired with encouragement to become fully licensed. The Postma Heating and Cooling have an education reimbursement program and help apprentices with purchasing their initial tools. Through great partnerships and government supports like Support Ontario Youth and Goodwill Industries' Canada Ontario Job Grant, our tradesperson can easily advance in their trades. Over 50% of Postma Heating and Cooling's tradespersons have over 10 years of experience in their trade. This in-house expertise is utilized to develop our apprentices and co-op students.
