What did you do after high school?
After high school, I went to Western University and Fanshawe College in London. I was in a dual program at both schools for four years. At Western I studied Media Studies, and at Fanshawe I studied web design and development.
What are you doing now?
Now, I am working full-time as the junior web developer for Blackburn Radio in Chatham-Kent. I'm really grateful for the opportunity to work in a field that I went to school for, for a family-owned company, while living back in Chatham-Kent. It's very rare that these opportunities come up… and on top of that, I’m doing something I love every day.
Name an experience that has positively motivated you.
An experience that has positively motivated me recently was a service learning trip I took to El Salvador this past February. While there we studied and observed the environment and social effects of gold mining on the small country of El Salvador. This was an informative experience as Canadian multinational companies are responsible for the gold mining related damage done to El Salvador. Seeing others suffer the consequences of things we benefit from here in Western culture (mined minerals provide cell phones, televisions, plumbing, the list goes on...) was a truly revealing and remorseful experience. I was also given the opportunity to be an “international observer” for a local referendum in the community of Cinquera. During the referendum I impartially observed citizens vote for or against mining in their community. As of recently, El Salvador has become the first country to completely ban metal mining, so they've seen a huge success and I’m so so grateful I got to be a tiny part of it. This experience positively motivated in so many ways, but notably I have sculpted a world view that goes well beyond borders. On my free time, I am currently looking to use my media/web design and development skills to help organizations involved in the fight against mining/corporate dominance in El Salvador. Online presence has a huge impact on the success of social movements so I hope I can use my skills to make an impact in that way. What did you do after high school? What is your #1 reason for choosing Chatham-Kent as “home”?
My reason for choosing Chatham-Kent as “home”, is my family. Being able to see my family everyday is another blessing. As well as, after living in London for 4 years, it’s nice to come back to a small family-based community with a relaxed atmosphere (and still close to the bigger cities!)
