Brian MachadoWhere did you grow up?

Chatham, Ontario.

What was your first job?

I began as a teenager working as a dishwasher in Chatham, first at Swiss Chalet, and then at Pranovi’s.

What is your favourite Chatham-Kent pastime?

My favourite pastime in Chatham-Kent – Festival of Nations, out in the park. I danced in the Portuguese folklore group. It was a lot of fun. We should bring that back!

What is your favourite season?

The summertime… in the beautiful downtown core where everyone takes pride in their property. It’s just a beautiful place to raise a family.

Name an experience that has positively motivated you.

I have always loved to eat, and so did my family when we all got together. This has always been a big part of our family’s Portuguese culture... sharing love through food and learning much from my mother and aunts about the secrets of Portuguese cuisine.

What did you do after high school?

I completed culinary programs at St. Clair College in Windsor George Brown College in Toronto. Then I went to Europe where I volunteered for some of the best chefs in in Paris and Lisbon. But I was a long way from my high school sweetheart Christina in Chatham, so I returned to southwestern Ontario to work as a Food and Beverage Manager at the Four Points by Sheraton in London. Then, after marrying Christina, I was offered a great chance to be a sous chef with Baton Rouge restaurants in Toronto.

What are you doing now?

I own and operate the Chatham Breakfast House and Grille, Churasscaria with my father, Antonio Machado, as well as our catering company, Four Diamond Catering, with business partner Matthew Harlick. We are committed to creating and serving top-of-the-line dishes made from high quality ingredients.

Why did you come back to Chatham-Kent?

After the birth our first son, we wanted to give him what we had growing up in Chatham Kent... a sense of community pride and togetherness. I was commuting to work at Caesar's Windsor when my father told me to have a look at a Chatham restaurant that was for sale. Then he told me he had already bought it... the future Chatham Breakfast House and Grille, Churasscaria.

Why live in Chatham-Kent?

Because it’s a great community, a great place to do business and a great place to raise a family. People seem to appreciate the simpler things in life!
