Todd and Peggy Bailey haven’t always lived in Chatham-Kent, but they have made it home for their family, as well as their longstanding saddlery business. Originally in the Brantford, ON area,
Bailey Saddlery began as a continuation of the business Todd’s father owned in Ancaster, ON. Todd grew up watching his dad, learning how to work with leather, and specifically, how to make beautiful, high quality, hand-crafted saddles.
About twenty years ago, Todd and Peggy were given the opportunity of a lifetime, which led them to live in Penhold, Alberta, where they continued to run Bailey Saddlery for seventeen years. Alberta, home to many rodeos and the Calgary Stampede, definitely seems like the perfect place for the saddlery business, and yet the Baileys were drawn back East to Ridgetown, Ontario.
While judging a horseshow in Chatham-Kent, the Baileys were introduced to the Ridgetown area, and it was enough to entice them back home to Ontario, with the company of two grown daughters. In 2011, Bailey Saddlery was opened and Ridgetown, and the couple have not had any regrets about the move.
From the GTA, to Alberta, to Chatham-Kent
The Baileys have the luxury of having lived in several different types of cities, which helps them to appreciate Chatham-Kent. The high numbers of people in the Branford area were certainly good for business, but that came with congestion and high housing costs. Penhold, Alberta was friendly, and ideal for their business, but not enough to keep the Baileys there, especially with its high cost of living and harsh, cold winters. The Baileys chose Chatham-Kent for the small community, close distance to amenities of larger cities, and three US borders. The area brings Todd very close to many horseshows, which is great for business, as well as providing the affordable and high quality of life that he and his wife enjoy.
