"Harvesting Freedom" Author Talk with Gabriel Allahdua
Monday, September 15 at 12:00 pm
Chatham Cultural Centre
Chatham-Kent Public Library is excited to welcome Gabriel Allahdua, author of "Harvesting Freedom: The Life of a Migrant Worker in Canada".
Gabriel will speak about the themes in his book regarding the hidden cost of Canada's food system: “As a migrant farm worker in Canada, I was called essential—but treated as disposable. Tied to a single employer, denied basic human rights, and excluded from the protections other workers take for granted, I laboured in fields that feed this country while being made vulnerable by law. In Canada, it is legal to exploit the soil, the environment, and the very people who harvest our food. Our fruits and vegetables are grown by hands that are too often overworked, underpaid, and unheard. A truly healthy, sustainable, and just food system must nourish everyone—from the land to the workers."
Copies of "Harvesting Freedom: The Life of a Migrant Worker in Canada" are available to borrow from CKPL.
This program is made possible by the generous support of Rotary Club of Chatham in celebration of Welcome Week.
This event is free to attend and open to all. No registration is required. Light refreshments will be served.
