Healthy & Safe Community

Where We Are

Three out of five Chatham-Kent residents are overweight-less than half are physically active on a daily basis and fruit and vegetable consumption locally is below the provincial average. The level of life stress reported by CK residents is below provincial values. The number of fires in CK increased by more than 25 percent in 2015. The non-violent crime severity index for CK was well above Ontario's value, although violent crime index was below provincial norms.

Where We Want to Be

Everyone will feel safe, supported and have opportunities to be healthy, physically and mentally.

Why It Matters

Health and safety begins in our families, neighbourhoods, schools, jobs and the way we design our communities. Every person in Chatham-Kent should have the opportunity to make the choices that allow them to live a long, healthy life regardless of their income, education or background.

Healthy communities are those in which good jobs, income equality, adequate housing, childcare and health care combine to provide a nurturing environment.

Social factors influencing health include the circumstance in which people are born, grow up, live, work, and age. These circumstances are, in turn, shaped by a wider set of factors including economics, social policies, and politics. Healthy communities are those in which good jobs, income equality, adequate housing, childcare and health care combine to provide a nurturing environment.
