Comments on incident/response: At approximately 5:15 p.m. on February 17, 2026, Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue responded to multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a house fire in the area of West Street and Lorne Avenue in Chatham. Fire crews from Stations 1 and 2 - Chatham arrived within minutes to find a working fire at a single family raised ranch home located at 136 West Street. Flames were visible on the exterior rear side of the structure, with fire extending into the attic. Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack, completed primary and secondary searches, and simultaneously knocked down fire on the exterior of the home. Firefighters remained on scene to conduct overhaul and check for hidden fire within the attic and soffits. Entegrus and Enbridge attended to secure utilities. The home sustained significant damage to the exterior and attic, with an estimated loss of approximately $200,000. The cause of the fire is undetermined. No injuries. Victim Services was contacted to support the affected family, and the property was returned to the homeowner once the fire was fully extinguished. Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue reminds residents of the importance of working smoke alarms. This home was equipped with functioning alarms, which alerted occupants to the emergency.
Firefighters will be returning to the area to conduct an After the Fire - Reassurance Campaign. While visiting residents, crews will check alarms, discuss fire safety planning and answer questions.
