Cause: Candles

Comments on cause: The cause of the fire was determined to be the result of unattended candles. Chatham-Kent Fire is reminding residents it is always best to use flameless candles, if real candles are used – never leave them unattended.

Comments on incident/response: Station #1 and Station #2 - Chatham, attended for reports of smoke coming from residence on Dufferin Ave, Chatham Thursday morning. Crews located a small fire in one of the bedrooms on the second floor of the three-storey building. Firefighters assisted several occupants out of the building where they were treated by EMS for minor smoke inhalation.

A firefighter was transported to Chatham-Kent Health Alliance as a precaution after sustaining a minor injury while on scene. The firefighter was treated and released shortly after. Chatham-Kent Police, Victim Services and Red Cross assisted with 6 occupants who were displaced.
