Comments on incident/response: Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue (CKFR) responded to a multi-unit residential structure fire at 140 King Street East, Chatham, on February 12, 2026, at approximately 5:39 p.m. Pumper 1 and Ladder 2 arrived to find heavy black smoke and visible flames coming from the rear apartment of the three-unit building. Firefighters quickly secured a hydrant and initiated an aggressive interior attack, bringing the fire under control within minutes. Crews completed primary and secondary searches of all units, confirming that no occupants were inside at the time of the incident. Firefighters also accessed the attic to check for extension, ventilated the structure, and completed overhaul operations. The fire was contained primarily to the rear apartment, with smoke spread into the attic. No injuries to report. The fire resulted in an estimated $180,000 in damage, and four individuals have been displaced. The cause of the fire is undetermined. CKFR would like to thank Entegrus, Enbridge, EMS, Public Works, and the Chatham-Kent Police Service for their assistance at the scene.
