MoneyComplete an Application to Get Your Vacancy Rebate

A maximum of two applications per year can be filed if the building has been vacant a minimum of 90 consecutive days.

You or your representative should return the completed signed application by February 28 of the following year. Please submit any additional documents you think may substantiate your application.  If the entire building is not vacant, a sketch or drawing of the vacant portion(s) must be completed on, or in conjunction with the application.

This rebate program provides tax relief to property owners who have vacancies in commercial and industrial buildings. Rebates will be issued by the Municipality to owners who submit a Commercial and Industrial Vacancy Rebate Application according to the instructions below by February 28 of the following year. It was approved by Council on September 11, 2017 to phase out the vacancy rebate program over a two year period starting in 2018, with the complete elimination prior to the 2020 tax year. The vacancy rebate program will be gradually phased out as shown below:

Commercial Vacant Unit Rebate

Application for Adjustment of Taxes under Section 357/358 of the Municipal Act

A property owner may make application under Section 357 or Section 358 of the Municipal Act for a refund of property taxes for the following reasons:

  • Ceased to be liable to be taxed at rate it is taxed
  • Became exempt
  • Razed by Fire, Demolition or Otherwise
  • Damaged and Substantially unusable
  • Sickness or Extreme Poverty
  • Mobile Unit removed
  • Gross or manifest clerical/factual error
  • Repairs/Renovations preventing normal use
This application must be submitted to the Municipality of Chatham-Kent on or before the deadline of February 28 of the year following the taxation year to which the application relates. Application for Adjustment of Taxes
