Deadline for final municipal tax bill extended to August 24

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has incurred a delay in the delivery of approximately 35,000 property tax bills with a due date of August 3, 2021 and as a result has extended the due date to August 24, 2021.  The municipality has a contractual relationship with a printing service provider to print and mail approximately 49,000 tax bills by July 9 as part of the first instalment of the final billing.

Chatham-Kent staff began to investigate mid July after receiving multiple calls from property owners regarding undelivered tax bills.  It was discovered that 35,000 tax bills printed at one of the facilities were never delivered to Canada Post.  Once the bills were delivered to Canada Post, further technical issues were discovered that has resulted in the requirement to reprint all 35,000 tax bills. Approximately 14,000 bills were printed at a separate facility and have been delivered to Chatham-Kent property owners.

The reprinting of the tax bills has commenced and will continue through the weekend.  Bills that are printed and prepared for delivery will be delivered to Canada Post before the close of business today with the expectation that the remaining bills will be delivered to Canada Post on the morning of Tuesday, August 3.  Property owners should start receiving their bills by the end of next week.  The tax bills will include an insert advising property owners of the new due date.  No interest will be charged on payments made on or before August 24, 2021.

Property owners on the pre-authorized payment plan will still have a bank withdrawal on August 3, 2021 (due date plan) or August 15, 2021 (monthly plan).

Taxpayers with questions about the final instalment can contact the tax department by phone at 3-1-1 or 519-360-1998 during office hours or by email at ckar@chatham-kent.ca.
