Chatham-Kent Portable Housing Program (CKPHB) is an affordable alternative to Rent-Geared-to-Income (RGI) housing offered by Chatham-Kent Housing Services, providing a monthly benefit to eligible participants to help them afford market rental units.
Applicants who are currently on the Chatham-Kent Rent-Geared-to-Income (RGI) waitlist are eligible and encouraged to apply and will be placed on a CKPHB waitlist. The CKPHB is an alternative to RGI and can be applied to long-term rental leases anywhere within the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. If the recipient remains eligible, this benefit is portable and moves anywhere within the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. Participants in this program will be removed from the RGI waitlist when they accept the CKPHB.
Eligibility
If you express interest and are offered a benefit, you will be given two (2) weeks to find a long-term market rental unit and sign a lease. If you are currently living in a long-term market unit and have signed a lease, your current home may meet program requirements.
Participants are responsible for finding their own long-term rental.
If you are offered a benefit and cannot find a long-term rental or do not accept the benefit, this will count as an "offer of housing" refusal. Please remember that a single refusal will result in your application being cancelled.
Housing Options
If you are currently leasing a rental unit in Chatham-Kent, your unit may already meet requirements. The benefit will continue wherever you move to within Chatham-Kent as long as program eligibility is met.
Program Timing
Participants in the CKPHB will receive the benefit for as long as they meet program eligibility requirements. There is no end date for this benefit. Participants are selected in the same way they are for RGI units. When there is an available benefit because a household leaves the program, a new household will be selected from the CKPHB waitlist by the same rules that RGI units are offered.
IMPORTANT NOTE: You must currently be on the Rent-Geared-to-Income (RGI) waitlist and have filed a CRA Tax Return and received a Notice of Assessment for the most current tax year to be eligible for this program.

If applying for Rent-Geared-to-Income, Rent Supplement or the Portable Housing Benefit, you are only required to fill out and submit one RGI Application for all three programs.
