Household Hazardous Waste Day a huge success

Indications are that Saturday’s Household Hazardous Waste Day may have been the most successful ever in terms of participation.

More than 1,400 vehicles brought household hazardous waste to public works garages in Chatham, Chatham Township and Tilbury between eight a.m. and three p.m. for collection by Veolia Environmental, a first-time project partner.

Chatham-Kent Manager of Waste and Recycling Services Rick Kucera said hundreds more vehicles dropped off waste oil only and are not included in the above-noted vehicle count.

Although it will be several weeks before officials have a detailed list of material dropped off at all three locations, it appears as if the sheer volume of material may be the highest since the event started in 2001.

“There is no doubt the weather helped but the bulk of the credit goes to Chatham-Kent residents,” Kucera said. “More people today are environmentally-conscious and when you combine that with the options for disposal that didn’t exist previously, we can all continue to make a positive difference. Our community, Veolia and Waste Connections can be proud of their efforts.”

Household Hazardous Waste Day is a joint project between Chatham-Kent and Waste Connections’ Ridge Landfill and is designed to ensure hazardous waste material is not placed in garbage containers where it could possibly injure collection workers or cause environmental damage.

Please check Chatham-Kent’s municipal website or the curbside collection calendar in 2020 to determine plans for next year’s Household Hazardous Waste Day event.
