Gateway Casino grand opening draws rave reviews

There were accolades all around Thursday afternoon as a crowd of more than 200 attended the formal opening of Gateway Casino’s new $36 million facility on Richmond Street in Chatham.

Gateway CAO Brad Bardua said Chatham has “exceeded all expectations” throughout the development process.

“If there is such a thing as a “blueprint” for a successful collaboration between local government and a private sector business it was written here in Chatham,” he said. Bardua noted that the project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

He praised Mayor Darrin Canniff, former Mayor Randy Hope, municipal council and staff for their assistance and the community for its support of the casino to date.

He noted that Gateway is a food, beverage and entertainment company, not a casino company. Under the “GatewayGIVES” charitable initiative, employees have designated the Chatham-Kent Hospice Foundation as its charity of choice through September as contributions will be made from the purchase of selected menu items.

Lori Sullivan, Chief Operating Officer of Ontario Lottery and Gaming, praised current and former municipal leaders for their vision on supporting the OLG’s mission of developing healthy, sustainable gaming.

She presented the municipality with a cheque for $884,638 as part of the OLG’s Municipality Contribution Agreement. Since the opening of the Dresden Slots in 2001, Chatham-Kent has received more than $12 million.

Mayor Darrin Canniff said it was an “amazing day” in Chatham-Kent. He welcomed the investment and the 200 jobs created by the casino opening and said he looks forward to an expansion in the future.

Chatham-Kent-Leamington MPP Rick Nicholls praised the partnership between the OLG, Gateway and and municipality in making the casino a reality.

Opening events for the casino will continue during the next week with a variety of promotions.
