Firefighters use Breakin Glass products while rescuing victims of car crashes
Chatham native Jason Pook is a professional firefighter with the City of London fire department, where he works on a rescue team that rescues people from crashed vehicles. “Car manufacturers are definitely building better vehicles. They’re a lot safer but, with that being said, when we roll up on the scene it takes a lot more work to get that patient out.” To assist with rescues, Pook has developed a hard, transparent shield and a safety-certified transparent tarpaulin that shield the victims of car crashes while firefighters use the jaws-of-life cutting tool to extricate them.
Pook turned to the Starter Company Plus program for help in starting his new business called Breakin Glass. “I have zero business background,” he says, adding that he found the seminar “inspiring” and the small business consultant very helpful: “He helped me tweak my business and run it a little more efficiently. He helped me get this grant, which directly helps our business.”
Pook now manufactures products in both Chatham-Kent and the USA, and has acquired Canadian and American distributors. “Business is going good. We just got picked up by a big distributor out of the New Jersey area that supplies the New York City fire department and a lot of that area. It’s only one distributor out of hundreds, so we’re working hard at it.”
