Merlin, Ontario is buzzing with activity this weekend as Mike and Pamela Davidson are cutting the ribbon and celebrating the official opening of Summer's Gold Honey Company. Located at 101 William Street in Merlin, Summer’s Gold produces, processes, and packages high quality local Canadian honey for consumer and business sales.
“We have been working day and night to reach a point where we felt ready to open our doors to the public, and now our dream has come true,” said Mike Davidson, Owner of Summer’s Gold Honey Company. “The market for local honey has been steadily growing over the past several years and already our sales have exceeded our expectations.”
“We are already in stores and shops across Chatham-Kent and Windsor/Essex, and having our own business storefront will help our customers and suppliers as it gives us a central base of operations in the community,” said Davidson. “We are a small business with big goals, but at the core of our business we believe that it’s crucial to establish and maintain solid relationships with our customers, so we will always strive to make the customer happy.”
In addition to a variety of honey options, Summer’s Gold is also selling beeswax, candles, lip balm, and other similar products. They also offer pollination services to local fruit and vegetable growers.
Davidson added, “Our honey is also being used in cosmetics, health care products, and organic products. It’s an exciting time for us.”
As part of their business development, Summer’s Gold Honey Company worked with the Chatham-Kent Small Business Centre and received a grant for $3500 as a graduate of the Starter Company Plus program.

“It is such a pleasure to work with Mike and Pamela because their passion comes shining through and I feel like I learn something new about beekeeping every time we meet,” said Rosemarie Montgomery, Business Consultant for the Chatham-Kent Small Business Centre. “They are very deserving of the Starter Company Plus grant as they developed a solid business plan with a focus on making their investment of both time and capital pay off in both the short-term and the long run.”
“We have been very fortunate to work with the Small Business Centre as they helped to guide us when we needed help,” said Pamela Davidson, Owner of Summer’s Gold Honey Company. “Not to mention the Starter Company Plus program training that really helped us to focus on our core objectives and set us up for success.”
Moving forward, the Davidsons plan to continue to expand their hive production with the hopes of reaching 100 active and strong bee hives by summer of 2019. Until then, people are invited to attend their Grand Opening and Open House which is slated for Saturday, December 1, 2018 at their location in Merlin.
