Chatham-Kent Small Business Centre is hosting a free information session regarding Bill 47, Making Ontario Open for Business Act. This event is being held on February 21, 2019, starting at 5:30 p.m. and will be located at the Chatham-Kent John D. Bradley Convention Centre.
The act which became law in November of 2018, came into effect January 1, 2019 and resulted in a number of changes to the Employment Standards Act. As part of their ongoing commitment to provide compliance support for business, the Ministry of Labour in partnership with the Small Business Centre is hosting this information session to provide businesses with a general overview of the Employment Standards Act featuring Bill 47 updates.
“Bill 47 rolls back several major employment and labour reforms introduced through Bill 148 last year and the new bill introduces several additional changes,” said Rosemarie Montgomery, Small Business Consultant with Chatham-Kent Economic Development. “It’s very important that companies of all size understand what has changed and how it will impact their business.”
Some changes include freezing the minimum wage at $14/hour, eliminating revised personal leave provisions, and the requirement for equal pay on the basis of sex will be maintained.
Keynote presenter Debra Kokovai, Regional Program Coordinator, Ministry of Labour, Employment Standards Operations Division will provide an informative look at changes brought from Bill 47 and will also be answering questions.
Montgomery added, “Debra Kokovai is an expert who can provide great insight into the new changes and Chatham-Kent businesses are invited to take this opportunity to hear from her and understand how things such as minimum wage is now tied to an annual inflation adjustment so they can be prepared.”
