Chatham

Chatham is the largest community within the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. It is situated less than 10 minutes from Highway 401 and has two interchanges. Chatham is within a one-hour drive from Windsor/Detroit, Sarnia/Port Huron and London. Many national and international businesses have chosen to establish in Chatham.

Chatham offers the largest concentration of retail shopping within Chatham-Kent including a vibrant downtown retail area, many strip plazas and three shopping centres.

Beautifically restored Victorian architecture situated along the scenic winding Thames River provides picturesque surroundings only Chatham can  boast.  Stunning wall murals decorate many of these historic buildings in the city core.  All within walking distance, visitors can shop, play, eat and stay in this quaint turn-of-the-century setting.

Historic Chatham is alive with specialty shops, riverfront dining, museums, a gallery and live theatre.  More than 200 retail stores, restaurants and services, cultural venues and a very unique retro-style hotel call downtown home.  Throughout the year, several special events add excitement to downtown Chatham and nearby Tecumseh Park.

The completion of a major restoration project will turn the 75-year-old downtown Chatham Capitol Theatre into the city's largest live entertainment venue, further enhancing the Historic Downtown Chatham experience.

Beyond the core, Chatham offers a variety of first-class family attractions including TJ Stables horseback riding and Greenview Aviaries Park and Zoo. Nearby, avid golfers can choose from four challenging courses.

A popular destination for former black slaves during the 1800's, Chatham pays homage to its heritage with three interesting sites featured on the province-wide African Canadian Heritage Tour.  The sites are the self-guided exhibit Black Mecca, The Story of Chatham's Black Community, Chatham First Baptist Church and the Mary Ann Shadd Cary Ontario Heritage Foundation Plaque.

Chatham offers an exceptional selection of dining, from casual to fine, and accommodations to suit every need, from the local hospitality of bed and breakfasts to national hotel chains.
