The Symbols of the Municipality of Chatham-Kent

The unique character and identity of the Municipality of Chatham-Kent is represented by two symbols, the Municipal Crest and the Chatham-Kent Brandmark. Effective in 2010, the Municipal Crest is used solely to represent the primacy of Chatham-Kent Council as the democratic body that represents all citizens of our community, while the new Chatham-Kent Brandmark represents the support provided to Council and citizens by the Corporation of the Municipality of Chatham-Kent and its community partners.

The CK Municipal Crest represents the rich history and heritage of Chatham-Kent. It was approved by Council and unveiled by the Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario, The Honourable Hilary M. Weston, soon after the 1998 incorporation of the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. The centrepiece of the crest is that of the White Horse of Kent, mounted on the Canadian red maple leaf. The Crest displays the Crown of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and symbols wheat and corn representing our strong agricultural heritage. The Latin motto “Invicta - Progressus” translates as “Unconquerable – Progressive”, expressing our community pride and determination to achieve the best for our community.

Effective in 2010, the Municipal Crest is used solely for formal expressions of the democratic leadership and voice of Chatham-Kent Council.

The CK Brandmark represents the daily service of the Corporation of the Municipality of Chatham-Kent and its community partners in providing for the needs of our community. The Brandmark is a practical business tool that, effective in 2010, is used to identify official business communications and support for community initiatives. In a symbolic sense, it is the signature mark of the Corporation of the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. As it must be used in a wide variety of technical applications, its design is simple and versatile. Chatham-Kent’s identity is represented through the design elements of the Brandmark. The colour blue represents the significance of water in Chatham-Kent’s ecology, transportation, agriculture, fishing and recreation. Green represents the significance of our nature, agriculture, and green and sustainable technologies. These elements are combined into a landscape or patchwork quilt motif that represents the Chatham-Kent’s cohesive spirit.

Community Partner and Commercial Use

Both the Municipal Crest and the Chatham-Kent Brandmark are legal trademarks of the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, and their use is administered and strictly regulated by the municipality. Action can be taken to correct any unauthorized or improper use of either symbol.
