Representing Chatham-Kent Council, Mayor Randy Hope will walk a mile in red high heeled shoes as part of the second annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event. The event raises money for the Chatham-Kent Women’s Centre on Sandy Street in Chatham and helps to raise awareness about violence against women. The local Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event is part of an International Men’s March protesting violence against women. There are 179 such events being held across North America.
“I think it is important as a community that we demonstrate zero tolerance for domestic violence,” said Mayor Hope. “The Walk a Mile in her Shoes event provides us with an excellent opportunity to protest against violence and do something practical for the Chatham-Kent Women’s Centre while also raising awareness about the need to help victims and perpetrators.”
“The Chatham-Kent Women’s Centre is pleased that Mayor Hope and several Councillors are participating. As community leaders it is important to step up and be part of the solution in addressing domestic violence,” states Marjorie Crew, Event Planner for the Chatham-Kent Women’s Centre.
The event is being held on Sunday, September 12, beginning at the Civic Centre with opening ceremonies at 12:30 PM and the march at 1 PM. The event is open to men, women, families and workplaces, although only men can wear the red shoes. Last year’s event raised more than $15,000 in pledges for the walkers taking part.
