The Municipality has received numerous complaints regarding the roosting of large numbers of crows during the winter season near residential areas. Crows like roosting in large numbers near rivers, because it is warmer and the illumination helps to protect them from their predators.
How is the Crow Problem Controlled?
Under Council's direction, Public Works' staff is using a number of methods such as noise makers and lights to relocate the crow population.
In addition to Public Works staff, the department has successfully brought in a company by the name of Bird Control International to assist with the problem.
Bird Control International uses a number of methods including flying of hawks and falcons to scare away crows and encourage them to roost in other locations outside of populated areas. The Municipality does not condone the killing of birds, we just wish to encourage them to move on.
What can home owners do to assist?
Crows attack bagged garbage for food. The Municipality encourages all home owners to do their part by placing their garbage in containers with a lid.
The Municipality has set up a Crow Control Hotline where a message can be left regarding:
- The location/address where the crows are roosting
- Approximate number of crows in that area
- Date and time of call
The telephone number for the Crow Control Hotline is 519.436.3232 (leave a message). This hotline is checked daily during the period of October to January of each year.
If you would like to talk to someone about the crow control issue, contact Director Public Works North at 519.360.1998.
Pigeons in Ridgetown
We do try to control the pigeons roosting in Ridgetown's downtown area. However, we do not control other types of pests, such as other birds or live animals.
