WiFi at CKPL
NEW! Check out the video tutorial on connecting to the CKPL wireless network!
Bring your laptop! Visit any of our 11 branches for free WiFi!

All locations of the Chatham-Kent Public Library now offer free wireless access to the Library’s WiFi network. People using the Library's wireless network must agree to abide by our Internet Policy and understand that failure to honour these terms may result in the loss of access privileges.

The service is open to all visitors free of charge. The SSID is library_hotspot. Staff can issue a guest account to visitors who don't have a Chatham-Kent Library Card for daily use.

Wireless Access FAQ

Q. What do I need to access the Library's wireless network?
A. You need a laptop computer or hand-held device with a Wireless Network Card (WiFi 802.11b or 802.11g compatible).
Most new laptops come with wireless technology already installed. For older laptops, you will need to purchase a wireless network card. After you have purchased the card, follow the manufacturer's instructions to install it on your computer.
Q. How do I connect to the Library's wireless network?
A. Most computers will automatically detect our wireless network and all you should have to do is start your Internet browser. The wireless network name is "library_hotspot."
If you normally use a different wireless network (with a different SSID) your computer may not find our network automatically. In that case, library staff can give you some printed instructions or quick advice for connecting to the wireless network.
Q. Why do I get a login fail message after I enter my Library card number and PIN?
A. Please check your Library card status with staff to see if you have fines or the card has expired. If you just got a new Library card, renewed your card or paid your fines, your updated information may not be in the wireless system yet. Ask staff to create a temporary account for you, and your account should be ready to use for next day.
Q. Can I print while using the Library's wireless network?
A. Mobile printing is available at the Chatham Branch and will soon be available at other locations. See printing at CKPL for more information.
Q. Are there limitations on the wireless network?
A. Yes, for security reasons there is no access to FTP, PPTP, SMTP, SSH, Telnet, or File Sharing. In addition, wireless access to some streaming audio/video may not be available.
Q. What kind of wireless card do I need?
A. You need an 11Mbps 802.11b or 802.11g Wireless Network Card. Many new laptop computers have wireless built in so you will want to check with your laptop or hand held device manufacturer for your options.
Q. How long does my connection last while I'm in the library?
A. There are currently no time limits, however the system may disconnect and require you to log in again if you have not been actively using the wireless network for an extended period of time.
Q. Can the Library help me configure my computer?
A. Sorry, the Library cannot accept the liability of handling your equipment. Everyone’s computer or device is different and you are responsible for knowing how to configure your own equipment. The Library cannot be responsible for any changes you make to your computer’s settings. If you need additional assistance, you may need to contact the hardware or software manufacturer.
Q. Will my Macintosh work with wireless in the Library?
A. Yes, as long as it supports 802.11b or 802.11g wireless.

Please note:
  • Please do not leave your laptop unattended. The Library is not responsible for stolen equipment.
  • If your laptop doesn’t have a charged battery, you may use available electrical outlets. Please be aware that your cords do not present a tripping hazard or prevent patrons and staff from moving freely. We recommend you charge your battery before coming to the library.
  • Please turn the sound on your laptop OFF. If you wish to listen to audio files, please  bring a set of headphones and keep the volume low.
  • The security of your laptop is your responsibility. We strongly encourage all wireless users to install up-to-date virus protection on their laptops or wireless devices and to download the latest security patches for their operating system and software. The Library is not responsible for any damage to patron laptops due to hackers, viruses, etc.
  • As with most public wireless hotspots you should assume the connection is not secure. Our library wireless is open to all users and is not encrypted. Keep that in mind before accessing sensitive personal or business information.
  • The Library cannot guarantee speed of wireless access or that wireless access will be available at all times. The Library can make no guarantee as to the compatibility of your equipment with the Library’s network.
