Job Description:
The Public Health Unit has two summer student openings for a Student Public Health Inspector. This summer student position would work approximately 35 hours per week. This position will be for a period from May 1, 2010, for period up to September 3, 2010. The Student Public Health Inspector will work with the Public Health Inspectors to provide environmental health programs according to Ministry of Health Ontario Public Health Standards and the associated Protocols and Guidelines. This will include enforcement of the Health Protection and Promotion Act, its Regulations, and any other pertinent legislation.
Responsibilities:
· Provide assistance to staff PHIs as they deliver environmental health programs. This may include:
o Routine inspections
o Investigation of complaints and health hazards
o Educational offerings
o Investigation of potential disease outbreaks
o Other tasks as they arise
· Assist with the management of the beach monitoring program which requires:
o Weekly inspection of area beaches
o Weekly collection of beach water samples for bacteriological analysis,
o Interpretation of the sample results
o Initiation of follow-up action
o Maintenance of all records and data
· Assist with the vector-borne surveillance program which requires:
o Weekly setting and collecting of mosquito traps
o Interpretation of the sample results
o Initiation of follow-up action
o Maintenance of all records and data
· Collection of specified food samples for bacteriological and chemical analysis. This will include
o Interpretation of the results
o Initiation of corrective and/or follow-up action
o Follow-up sampling
· Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
· To be eligible for this position students must be enrolled in a CIPHI approved Environmental Health Program 5
· To be eligible for this summer student position, students must have attended a secondary or post-secondary institution full-time in the spring of 2010, and/or attending a secondary or post-secondary institution full-time in the fall of 2010Ability to work independently and within a team environment
· Must have initiative and organizational skills
· Must possess good written and oral communication skills
· Strong interpersonal skills and diplomacy
· Ability to follow and adhere to Municipality of Chatham-Kent policies, procedures, goals and objectives
· Competency in current computer programs (i.e. Microsoft Office)
· Because of the responsibilities, this position requires the successful candidate to have a valid (class G) Ontario driver’s licence; a driver’s abstract will be conducted by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent; a reliable motor vehicle is necessary
· Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) prior to commencement of employment
Compensation:
This summer student position has an hourly wage range of $17.90 to $23.26, as per the CUPE 12.3 union collective agreement, plus vacation and statutory benefits according to the Employment Standards Act.
