Job Description:
Parks, Cemeteries & Horticulture has a summer student opening for a Parks Maintenance student in Chatham to assist with the maintenance of parks, playground equipment, and sport fields within the community. This summer student position would work approximately 40 hours per week. This position will be for a period from the beginning of May, for period up to September 15, 2010.
Responsibilities:
· Assisting with maintenance of ball diamonds, soccer pitches, skateboard parks and other sport related facilities
· Assisting with park cleanup, garbage control and park maintenance
· Painting equipment, waste containers, park benches, park buildings, signs
· Assisting in maintaining pathways, parking lots and bridges that are associated with parks
· Assisting in preparations for community special events
· Assisting park users and tourists in the parks
· Reporting vandalism, maintenance and/or public concerns
· Landscape and grounds maintenance duties
· Washroom cleaning and maintenance
Qualifications:
· To be eligible for this summer student position, students must have attended a secondary or post-secondary institution full-time in the spring of 2010, and/or attending a secondary or post-secondary institution full-time in the fall of 2010
· Students should possess an interest in pursuing a career in parks, recreation or sports management and enjoy working outdoors and with the public
· Students should have a working knowledge of small equipment, farm equipments such as tractors, weed eaters, trailers, tillers,
· Because of the responsibilities of this position, students should have physical strength and ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting, up to 50 pounds (22.73 kg), as well as working with landscaping material, refuse, etc.
· Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) prior to commencement of employment
· Because of the responsibilities, this position requires the successful candidate to have a valid (class G) Ontario driver’s licence; a driver’s abstract will be conducted by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent
Interviews are tentatively scheduled the week of February 22, 2010.
Compensation:
This summer student position has an hourly wage range of $10.25 to $11.00 (based on 2010 student compensation plan), plus vacation and statutory benefits according to the Employment Standards Act.
