Job Description:
Parks, Cemeteries & Horticulture has a summer student opening for Horticulture Maintenance students in Chatham to maintaining flowerbeds, boxes and baskets by watering, weeding, edging and general upkeep throughout the community of Chatham. There is a potential for up to 10 student positions. This summer student position would work approximately 35 hours per week. This position will be for a period from the beginning of May, for period up to August 27, 2010.
Responsibilities:
· Work outside in all weather conditions
· Assist with turf area maintenance by removing weeds, re-sod, and edge using equipment and tools such seeders, shovels, picks, hoes, rakes and edgers
· Assist with planting and pruning trees, shrubs, groundcover, and flowers using equipment and tools such as shovels, shears and loppers
· Rake, gather, load and haul, refuse, and cut vegetation from landscaped areas, in order to clean trash and debris
· Watering of plant material located in beds, boxes, planters, baskets, etc. using a various watering systems
· Reporting vandalism, maintenance and/or public concerns
Qualifications:
· To be eligible for this summer student position, students must have attended a secondary or post-secondary institution full-time in the spring of 2010, and/or attending a secondary or post-secondary institution full-time in the fall of 2010
· Ideal candidates would possess an interest in pursuing a career in parks or horticulture, and enjoy working outdoors, and with the public
· Have a working knowledge of small equipment
· Because of the responsibilities of this position, students should have physical strength and ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting, up to 50 pounds (22.73 kg), as well as working with landscaping material, refuse, etc.
· Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) prior to commencement of employment
· Because of the responsibilities, this position requires the successful candidate to have a valid (class G or G2) Ontario driver’s licence; a driver’s abstract will be conducted by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent
Interviews are tentatively scheduled between April 1, and May 1, 2010.
Compensation:
This summer student position has an hourly wage range of $10.25 to $11.00 (based on 2010 student compensation plan), plus vacation and statutory benefits according to the Employment Standards Act.
