Job Description:
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent’s Cultural & Special Events is currently seeking a Historical Interpreter summer student at the Milner Heritage House. This position will report to the Museum Curator. This position will work between 30 and 35 hours per week, from approximately May 17, 2010, for a period up to September 6, 2010.
Responsibilities:
· Provide costumed interpretation for visitors and children's groups
· Demonstrate period crafts and activities
· Plan and implement special events
· Conduct museum education programs for schools
· Handle cash for gift shop sales
· Perform clerical and security functions, as well as daily museum tasks as assigned
Qualifications:
· This position has applied to the Young Canada Works (YCW) student subsidy program; to be eligible to apply to this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:
o Registered in the YCW on-line candidate inventory (see http://www.pch.gc.ca/special/jct-ycw/info-ppts/101-eng.cfm for information on how to register)
o Do not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW
o Have been a full-time student (as defined by your educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW job
o Intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW job
o Are legally entitled to work in Canada
o Are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (note: Non-Canadian students holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible)
o Are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
o Meet the eligibility criteria of the program for which you have been approved
o Are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment
o Note: Priority is given to candidates who have not previously participated in a summer work experience program
· Candidates will have a background in history or a related field
· Museum experience would be an asset
· Candidates should also possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong research and writing ability, and an interest and knowledge of the history of Chatham-Kent
· First aid an asset
· Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) prior to commencement of employment
Compensation:
This summer student position will pay an hourly wage of $10.25 (as per the 2010 student compensation plan), plus vacation and statutory benefits in accordance with Employment Standards Act.
