Job Description:

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent’s ITS division has an opening for a Help Desk Co-op Student.  The Help Desk Co-op Student will assist other Help Desk Attendants with the day-to-day end user support of hardware and software issues. This position would start on May 3, 2010, or as soon as possible after this date, for a period up to September 3, 2010.  The location for this position is the Civic Centre.  Hours of work are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 

Responsibilities:

·         Answers, evaluates, and prioritizes telephone, voice mail, e-mail and in-person requests for assistance from users experiencing problems with hardware, software, networking and other computer-related technologies

·         Interviews user to collect information about problem and leads user through diagnostic procedures to determine source of error

·         Determines whether problem is caused by hardware such as modem, printer, cables or telephone

·         Handles problem recognition, research, isolation, resolution and follow-up for routine user problems, referring more complex problems to other Information Systems staff

·         Logs and tracks calls using problem management database, and maintains history records and related problem documentation

·         Prepares standard statistical reports, such as Help Desk incident reports

·         Analyzes and evaluates incident reports and makes recommendations to reduce help line incident rate

·         Consults with appropriate Information Systems staff to explain software errors and to recommend changes to programs

·         Calls software and hardware vendors to request service regarding defective products

 

Qualifications:

·         This summer student position is subject to receiving student subsidy funding; the funding requires the summer student to be attending a secondary or post-secondary institution full-time in the spring 2010 semester, and returning to a secondary or post-secondary institution full-time in the fall 2010 semester

o    Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment

o    Attending a secondary or post-secondary institution full-time in the spring 2010 semester, and returning to a secondary or post-secondary institution full-time in the fall 2010 semester

o    Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act

o    Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations

·         Because of the responsibilities of this position, preference will be given to those students currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution in an Information Technology related program

·         A professional and courteous phone manner

·         Excellent verbal and written communication skills

·         Excellent interpersonal skills

·         Solid organizational and time management skills

·         Strong problem-solving skills and decision-making ability

·         Ability to work independently

·         A good working knowledge of a Window's environment, available tools, policies and Microsoft software applications/utilities

·         Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) prior to commencement of employment

·         Because of the responsibilities, this position requires the successful candidate to have a valid (class G or G2) Ontario driver’s licence; a driver’s abstract will be conducted by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent 

 

Interviews are tentatively scheduled between April 12 and 16, 2010.

 

Compensation:

This summer student position has an hourly wage of $12.50 to $14.50 (based on 2010 student compensation plan), plus vacation and statutory benefits in accordance with Employment Standards Act.
