Job Description:
Recreation Facilities currently has a summer student Downtown Core Maintenance positions available for the summer of 2010 in the Blenheim district. Students will report to the area’s Facilities Supervisor. This position will work approximately 35 hours per week. The position will be from the end of April, for a period up to September 3, 2010.
Responsibilities:
· Control of unwanted weed and grass growth in sidewalks, curbs and gutters
· Remove litter along curbs, sidewalks, flowerbeds and flower boxes
· Empty full waste containers on days when garbage pickup is not scheduled
· Paint downtown fixtures (waste containers, benches, flower boxes, etc.)
· Assist in preparations for special events
· Maintain the assigned downtown areas in a clean and safe manner
· Assist users and tourists in the downtown area
· Notify Recreation Facilities Supervisor immediately of vandalism, maintenance and/or public concerns
Qualifications:
· This summer student position is subject to receiving student subsidy funding; the funding requires the summer student to be attending a secondary or post-secondary institution full-time in the spring 2010 semester, and returning to a secondary or post-secondary institution full-time in the fall 2010 semester
o Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
o Attending a secondary or post-secondary institution full-time in the spring 2010 semester, and returning to a secondary or post-secondary institution full-time in the fall 2010 semester
o Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
o Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations
· Because of the responsibilities required for this position, preference will be given to those grade 12 or above
· Ideal candidates would possess an interest in pursuing a career in recreation, horticulture or special events
· Have a working knowledge of small equipment
· Because of the responsibilities of this position, students should have physical strength and ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting, up to 50 pounds (22.73 kg), as well as working with landscaping material, refuse, etc.
· Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) prior to commencement of employment
· Because of the responsibilities, this position requires the successful candidate to have a valid (class G or G2) Ontario driver’s licence; a driver’s abstract will be conducted by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent
Interviews are tentatively scheduled to take place during the last two weeks in March.
Compensation:
This summer student position has an hourly wage range of $10.25 to $11.00, (based on 2010 student compensation plan), plus vacation and statutory benefits according to the Employment Standards Act.
