Job Description:
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent’s ITS division has an opening for a Computer Technician Summer/Co-op Student. The Computer Technician Summer/Co-op Student will assist other technicians with the day-to-day end user support of hardware and software issues. This position would start on May 3, 2010, or as soon as possible after this date, for a period up to September 3, 2010. The location for this position is the Civic Centre. Hours of work are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Responsibilities:
· Assess job related tasks as assigned and implement their completion to the satisfaction of the end user
· Maintain the proper installation of hardware and software
· Install, modify and make minor repairs to personal computer hardware and software
· Install or assist in the installation of hardware and peripheral components such as monitors, keyboards, printers and disk drives on user’s premises
· Provide technical assistance and training to system users
· Install standard corporate software and any specific software packages requested by the ordering business unit
· Responds to client enquiries concerning system operation
· Diagnoses system hardware, software and operator problems
Qualifications:
· This summer student position is subject to receiving student subsidy funding; the funding requires the summer student to be attending a secondary or post-secondary institution full-time in the spring 2010 semester, and returning to a secondary or post-secondary institution full-time in the fall 2010 semester
o Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
o Attending a secondary or post-secondary institution full-time in the spring 2010 semester, and returning to a secondary or post-secondary institution full-time in the fall 2010 semester
o Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
o Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations
· Because of the responsibilities of this position, preference will be given to those students currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution in an Information Technology related program
· A professional and courteous phone manner
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills
· Excellent interpersonal skills
· Solid organizational and time management skills
· Strong problem-solving skills and decision-making ability
· Ability to work independently
· A good working knowledge of the Microsoft Windows XP environment, Microsoft applications/utilities and hardware replacement
· Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) prior to commencement of employment
· Because of the responsibilities, this position requires the successful candidate to have a valid (class G or G2) Ontario driver’s licence; a driver’s abstract will be conducted by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent
Interviews are tentatively scheduled between April 12 and 16, 2010.
Compensation:
This summer student position has an hourly wage of $12.50 to $14.50 (based on 2010 student compensation plan), plus vacation and statutory benefits in accordance with Employment Standards Act.
