Job Description:
Parks, Cemeteries & Horticulture has a summer student opening for a Communities in Bloom Maintenance student in the Blenheim, Bothwell, Chatham, Dresden, Mitchell's Bay, Ridgetown, Thamesville, Tilbury, Wallaceburg and Wheatley areas (please forward a separate career profile and resume for each location - see below); this position will be responsible for the maintenance, improvement and general upkeep of community grounds, landscapes, flower beds, boxes and baskets by watering, weeding, edging and pruning. This summer student position would work approximately 35 hours per week. This position will commence between May 3, 2010 and June 21, 2010, for a period up to September 3, 2010.
Responsibilities:
· Work outside in all weather conditions
· May assist in maintaining of turf areas: mow, seed, remove weeds, lay sod, and edge using equipment and tools such rototillers, seeders, shovels, picks, hoes, rakes and edgers
· Assist with planting and pruning of trees, shrubs, groundcover, and flowers using equipment and tools such as shovels, shears and loppers
· Watering of plant material located in beds, boxes, planters, baskets, etc. using a various watering systems
· Assisting with community cleanup, garbage control and public grounds maintenance
· May assist with painting waste containers and/or benches
· Reporting vandalism, maintenance and/or public concerns
Qualifications:
· To be eligible for this summer student position, students must have attended a secondary or post-secondary institution full-time in the spring of 2010, and/or attending a secondary or post-secondary institution full-time in the fall of 2010
· Ideal candidates would possess an interest in pursuing a career in parks or horticulture, and enjoy working outdoors and with the public
· Experience with plants, garden tools, and a working knowledge of small equipment are assets, but not necessary
· Because of the responsibilities of this position, students should have physical strength and ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting, up to 22 kg (50 lbs.) while working with landscaping material, litter, etc.
· Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) prior to commencement of employment
· Because of the responsibilities, this position requires the successful candidate to have a valid (class G or G2) Ontario driver’s licence; a driver’s abstract will be conducted by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent
· Because this position would be required to travel, a reliable motor vehicle is necessary
Interviews are tentatively scheduled to take place between April 1 and May 1, 2010.
Compensation:
This summer student position has an hourly wage range of $10.25 to $11.00 (based on 2010 student compensation plan), plus vacation and statutory benefits according to the Employment Standards Act.
