Job Description:
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent requires one Arts Program Assistant for a seasonal summer student position at the Thames Art Gallery. This position will run for 9 weeks, beginning July 2, 2010 for a period up to August 31, 2010.
Responsibilities:
· Under the supervision of the Gallery Program Coordinator, the successful candidate will assist with all aspects of the Thames Art Gallery summer art camps for children
· Duties will include general set and clean up of supplies before and after all activities, as well as preparation of materials needed
· The applicant will also be responsible for supervising the children at break times, lunch breaks, and daily visits to a near by park
· The assistant will be given instruction and demonstration by the Program Coordinator in a variety of art media so that they are able to assist the children with their art projects
· The candidate will develop an art lesson during the first two weeks of art camps that they will present some time during the final session
· The candidate will assist the instructors of the adult programs
Qualifications:
· This position has applied to the Young Canada Works (YCW) student subsidy program; to be eligible to apply to this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:
o Registered in the YCW on-line candidate inventory (see http://www.pch.gc.ca/special/jct-ycw/info-ppts/101-eng.cfm for information on how to register)
o Do not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW
o Have been a full-time student (as defined by your educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW job
o Intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW job
o Are legally entitled to work in Canada
o Are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (note: Non-Canadian students holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible)
o Are between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
o Meet the eligibility criteria of the program for which you have been approved
o Are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment
o Note: Priority is given to candidates who have not previously participated in a summer work experience program
· Because of the responsibilities of this position, preference will be given to candidates with a background in art or a related field; a keen interest in art and a general knowledge of art materials and colour theory would also benefit the candidate
· Candidates should possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and enjoy spending time with children
· First aid an asset
· Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) prior to commencement of employment
Compensation:
This summer student position will pay an hourly wage of $10.25 (based on grade 1 of the 2010 student compensation plan), for approximately 35 hours per week, plus vacation and statutory benefits in accordance with Employment Standards Act.
