Job Description:
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is currently accepting applications for a permanent part-time casual call-in Cook (11 hours per week) for Riverview Gardens Long Term Care facility with the Seniors Services division.

Responsibilities:
· As a member of the Dietary Food Service team, the cook is responsible for preparing of all meals to be served to resident, staff and visitors of the home, in accordance with safe food handling techniques; prepares food, which provides high nutritive value, flavour, colour, texture and appearance, following standardized recipes
· Operating all equipment in dietary department; cleaning and sanitizing of food service equipment and wares; completing pre-start up equipment checks as necessary
· Strict adherence to the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Public Health Regulations and the Sanitation Code for Homes for the Aged and Rest Home Act is required
· Keeping control of food storage rooms, freezers and refrigerators; dates, labels, and stores all food properly; reducing waste by following production sheets and recipes; discarding leftovers according to policy
· Using all tools and information provided including recipes, specially prepared menus and production sheets to maintain the highest possible quality and consistency and quantity
· Accurate record keeping, receiving, rotating and inventory of products; ordering of required items as needed
· Ensuring all special dietary needs are met; portioning food to meet the residents’ dietary requirements
· Preparing texture modified food as directed to ensure proper texture and amount
· Ensuring that food is ready to be served at required times
· Serving of meals as required
· Maintaining Quality Assurance records
· Discussing resident meals service requirements with food service coordinators and supervisor
· Ensuring that home and dietary department policies and procedures are followed
Qualifications:
· Posses a secondary school graduation diploma or equivalent education (i.e. GED certificate)
· Completion of the Food Safety Training Program Certificate Labour Certificate of Qualification of Cook (LCQC) certificate (or 6000 hours of cooking experience (Minimum hours required to write the LCQC exam as per the Apprentice shop requirements of the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities)
Cooks with less than 6000 hours (but more than 4000 hours) of cooking experience, as per the Apprentice shop requirements of the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities) must successfully complete the exam of LCQC within six months of achieving 6000 hours
· Cooks who have less than 6000 hours (but more than 4000 hours) of cooking experience or do not have LCQC and do not possess a culinary management degree, or approved College course for cooks, must have:
o Successfully completed, or have current enrolment in, a Food Services Worker (FSW) training program at an established college or registered private career college in Ontario (LTCHA, 2007 78 (1))
o Applicant must include proof of successful completion or current enrolment with their application
o For applicants currently enrolled in the FSW course, they must successfully complete the program within three (3) years from the first day of employment
· Knowledge of Ministry of Health LTC Regulations for Nutrition and Food Services
· Knowledge of Public Health Regulations and the Sanitation Code
· Food preparation courses would be an asset
· Knowledge of good sanitation and food handling techniques to avoid infection or the spread of contagious illnesses
· Possess excellent decision making skills required for estimating food requirements and portions
· Experience working as a cook in a Long Term Care setting an asset
· Must be able to read, write and accurately follow written and verbal instructions
· Able to answer phone professionally and respond to issues/requests
· Basic computer skills required
· Must possess effective listening skills and the ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner
· The employer may request a “Physical Task Analysis”
· Under the Long Term Care Homes Act, all employees are required to provide evidence of, or submit to, a 2-step TB skin test (TB skin tests will be completed the first day or orientation unless the new employee can provide proof of a clear TB test)
· Able to accept on short notice call-in hours for days, afternoons, and weekends, which may include four hour shifts
· Because of the environment this position will be working in, the successful candidate will be required to furnish a Police Information Search (criminal reference check) prior to commencement of employment
Compensation:
This permanent part-time casual position has an hourly wage range of hourly wage range of $18.12 to $24.49 (2011 rates), plus 15% in lieu of benefits following the successful completion of a probationary period and 4% vacation pay, as per the C.A.W. collective agreement.
