Job Information:
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is currently accepting applications for their External Job Registry for future permanent and/or temporary full-time Equipment Operators.
Applications will be accepted starting January 1, 2010, up to 4:30 p.m. on June 30, 2010, for future permanent and temporary Equipment Operator positions. Please only apply once during this period.
Positions may be located at any of the following garages and cemeteries:
Public Work Garages:
Chatham Township Garage, Dover Garage, Harwich Gravel Pit, Kent Centre Garage, PABC Garage (Chatham), Raleigh Garage, Ridgetown Garage, Thamesville Garage, Tilbury East Garage, Wallaceburg Garage
Cemeteries:
Chatham Cemetery, Dresden/Wallaceburg Cemeteries
Responsibilities for Public Works may include:
· Read/interpret underground water and sewer blueprints and be able to identify hazardous waste symbols and signage
· Work outside in all weather conditions and in an unsanitary environment
· Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, loaders, tractors and graders to excavate, move, load and grade earth, rock, gravel or other materials during construction and related activities
· Operate dredging equipment to deepen waterways or reclaim earth fill
· Operate paving and surfacing equipment to lay, spread or compact concrete, asphalt and other surface materials during highway and road construction
· Operate heavy equipment to move, load and unload cargo
· Operate street cleaning equipment such as street sweepers to remove sand, litter and trash
· Operate snow ploughs to remove snow from streets, highways and parking lots
· Operate sewer maintenance equipment such as sewer flusher to maintain and repair sewer systems
· Operate trucks equipped with road sanding, road oiling and similar apparatus
Qualifications for Public Works positions:
· Posses a Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent education (i.e. GED certificate)
· Level 1 Water Distribution Certificate and OIT in Waste Water Collection an asset
· Supplementary training in water, sewer, recycling and waste management an asset
· Due to the responsibilities of this position, the candidate must be physically fit and reliable
· Experience operating a 5 cubic yard loader, combination snow plough and spreader unit is required; previous experience using other heavy equipment an asset
· Experience in operating the following related heavy equipment associated with landfill operations and water and sewer systems an asset: track loaders up to 5 cubic yard bucket capacity, self propelled compactor units, vactor truck, vacuum truck, rubber tire backhoe up to 90 hp, and chainsaw, an asset
· Surface Minor Common Core certificate to work with gravel an asset
· Agricultural experience working with large and/or heavy equipment an asset
· Basic computer skills are required
· Because of the responsibilities, this position requires the successful candidate to have and maintain a valid (a minimum class D with Z endorsement) Ontario driver’s licence; a driver’s abstract will be conducted by the Municipality of Chatham-Kent
Responsibilities for Parks, Cemeteries & Horticulture may include:
· Read and interpret cemetery lot plans and be able to correctly identify appropriate interment locations
· Provide good communication and public relations skills with the ability to deal diplomatically and confidentially with the public using a courteous, tactful and empathetic manner
· Operate a Blue Giant Lift to open and close mausoleum crypts and niches
· Provide cemetery maintenance to include turf, horticulture and buildings, as well as operate equipment to carefully remove and re-install memorials/monuments
· Work outside in all weather conditions and in an unsanitary environment
· Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, loaders, tractors and trackless sweeper to landscape, perform interments, disinterments and other cemetery related activities
· Operate heavy equipment to move, load and unload cargo
· Maintain turf areas: mow, aerate, fertilize, seed, remove weeds, re-sod, and edge lawns using equipment and tools
· Plant and prune trees, shrubs, groundcover, and flowers using equipment and tools such as chain saws, chippers, shovels, shears and loppers
· Rake, gather, load and haul, refuse, and cut vegetation from cemeteries, in order to clean trash and debris
· Note possible safety hazzards or unsafe conditions and make necessary repairs or modifications.
Qualifications for Parks, Cemeteries & Horticulture cemetery positions:

· Level I or II Certificate in Cemetery Operations (ORFA) an asset
· Experience in cemetery grounds and horticulture maintenance an asset
· Experience operating a 5 cubic yard loader and rubber tire backhoe up to 90 hp is required; previous experience using other heavy equipment and chainsaw an asset
· Experience in the operation of a Blue Giant Lift, an asset
· Basic computer skills are required

Compensation:
This position has a wage range of $17.97 to $22.46 (2010 rates), as per C.U.P.E Local 12.1 collective agreement.
