Chatham-Kent is celebrating the torch – with style. Despite the cold weather, an estimated 6,500 people came to Chatham’s Kinsmen Auditorium and Memorial Arena on December 22 for the CK Celebrates the Torch Event!
During the afternoon, families took part in all sorts of activities, including face painting, pony rides and community group stage performances. The outdoor stage show assembled by our CK Olympic Torch Relay Task Force and VANOC, and sponsored by Coca Cola and RBC, and was spectacular. CK’s own Canadian Cowgirls escorted the Olympic torch to the site. The crowd roared with excitement when torchbearer Chris Beausoleil made his way to the stage to light the cauldron.
“Chatham-Kent hosted the most amazing event last evening with over 6500 citizens attending - young and old and all ages in between,” said Mayor Randy Hope. “It was a fabulous event. The Canadian patriotism and spirit was contagious.”

Several photographers have donated their time, expertise, and photos to the municipality. One excellent collection by Chris Marvell is now posted online at http://www.flickr.com/photos/chrismarvell/sets/72157623054747702/
