Quality of Life Indicators Report

The QOL report follows the six objectives of the Community Strategic Plan: health, economy, environment, culture, civic engagement, and learning. This report measures the quality of life of CK’s citizens.

This document, published by the Community Strategic Plan Implementation Committee, represents a collaborative effort among many community groups who provided the information. It will become the standard to which Chatham-Kent compares itself from year to year. Some examples are:

  • Chatham-Kent citizens are more likely than other Ontarians to participate in municipal elections, with 44.3% exercising their right to vote in the 2003 election compared to the provincial average of 30 to 35%. However, voter turnout was 52% for the 2000 election.
  • As a measure of water quality and public health, between 2002 and 2003, the number of weeks area beaches were open for swimming increased from 7 to 10.
  • 2003 was a banner year for agricultural building permits. New greenhouse development in Chatham-Kent saw a $12 million increase since 1999.
  • The volume of waste diverted from landfills through blue box recycling increased from 2,788 metric tonnes in 1998 to 3,747 metric tonnes in 2003.
  • Per capita giving to United Way went up from $14.75 to $17.28, putting Chatham-Kent 10th in Canada out of 126 United Ways.
