New By-Law for Open Air Burning

On Monday November 9th Council approved a Municipal-wide Open Air Burning By-Law.

Points of Interest:

  1. The by-law identifies the distance of a fire pit from property lines and combustibles to be 7.5 metres (25 feet).

  1. The hours for cooking on fire pits are from 12:00 noon to 1:00 am.

  1. The open air burning application has been changed to allow the station chief or designate to determine pile size and safe clearance distances upon a visual inspection.

  1. Open air burnings shall be confined to a location that provides for a safe clearance distance from combustible structures or objects when used in a Licensed Recreation Camp.

  1. Open-air burning is not permitted in urban areas unless such burning consists of a small, confined fire supervised at all times, and used to cook food on a grill or barbecue. Once cooking is completed the fire must be extinguished. Most chimneas, fire bowls, fire pits etc, do not comply with the above Fire Code Article and are only allowed with a grill for cooking purposes.

  1. Open-air burning is not permitted in rural areas unless approved by the Station Chief of your community fire station.

  1. An open-air burning application is not required for a fire pit in urban or rural areas.

  1. Burn barrels are not allowed under the legislation of the Ontario Fire Code.

  1. The by-law will be enforced on a “by complaint” basis.

The complete by-law will be posted once the document has been signed by the Municipal Clerk and Mayor.
