Depo Provera

Depo Provera is available by prescription from your family doctor, nurse practitioner or Sexual Health clinic. It is an injectable method of preventing pregnancy. It uses a hormone to stop the egg from releasing from the ovary. The shot is given in the arm or buttocks once every 3 months. Depo Provera is 99.7% effective if you get the shot within the first 5 days of your period starting. Side effects are irregular period to no period. Moodiness can increase as well as a possible weight gain of 8-10 lbs. Depo Provera is covered under most drug plans.
