Canadian Environment Week JUNE 5 – 11, 2005
CLEAN AIR DAY – WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8
To all patrons of CKtransit
Wednesday, June 8, 2005
to celebrate Clean Air Day
all rides on the CKtransit System will be
FREE
Canadians from coast to coast will be celebrating Clean Air Day on Thursday, June 8.
· Take public transit, carpool, bike, walk, or rollerblade.
· Reduce air conditioning needs in summer by using drapes/window blinds, ceiling fans.
· Keep your oil or gas furnace properly tuned. A well-maintained unit uses 10-15% less energy.
· Use energy-efficient lighting. Fluorescent bulbs for use in standard sockets are now available and are more than four times as efficient, and last 8-15 times longer than regular bulbs.
· Turn lights off when they are not needed and turn down the furnace when the house is empty and at night.
· Reduce! Reuse! Recycle! It takes much less energy to manufacture new products from recycled materials than from raw materials.
· Carpool to practices and other children's activities to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.
· Compost kitchen scraps and yard waste.
· Turn off your computer when not in use, or at least the monitor. Even the screen saver uses energy.
· Avoid idling – 10 seconds of idling uses more fuel than restarting your engine.
· Keep your vehicle in good condition. Check your tire pressure regularly.

Take the Bus, Ride on the CKtransit FREE
Clean Air Day is June 8, 2005
As part of Canadian Environment Week, let’s take action to clean the air we breathe, from June 5th to June 11th and find other ways to get to and from work. Consider car pooling, riding your bicycle, putting on your rollerblades or simply walking. On June 8th those who ride the bus will be able to ride for free.
Organize a Clean Air Day Challenge in your Workplace
Some ideas for a workplace challenge include: organize a walk on your lunch, turn down the lights, talk to your employer about participating in The National Clean Air Day Workplace Challenge on June 8.
