The following is a list of events and programs that have been made possible by funding provided by Healthy Living Chatham-Kent (HLCK).
Tobacco Programs
Media Campaigns
Promotion of the following smoke-free focused events/activities - National Non-smoking week, Quit and Win Contest, and World No Tobacco Day
Teen Tobacco Summit
In partnership with Lambton-Kent District School Board, St. Clair Catholic District School Board, Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit, and the Mayor’s Youth Council planning, preparation and implementation of a one-day youth summit focusing on deglamorization, denormalization and cessation of tobacco use.
Workplace Programs
Engagement of workplaces in educational/awareness events for workers on effective healthy living strategies that promote healthy living choices everyday – to be more active, eat healthy foods, to be smoke-free and to reduce stress. A workplace display is available along with information cards on the healthy living theme.
Healthy Living Social Marketing Campaign Development
Designed to increase community awareness of HLCK purpose, vision and activities. This program utilizes multiple media, including the internet, TV, radio, print media and outdoor advertising (billboards) to reach a maximum number of people. The strategy integrates existing promotional resources with emphasis on healthy lifestyle choices.
Nutrition Programs
Families are Munching
In partnership with local school boards offer a weeklong campaign during the school year. Grade 4 students and their parents track their consumption of vegetables and fruit to ensure they consume the minimum number of recommended servings according to Canada’s Food Guide.
Let’s Cook
In partnership with Dresden Senior Ladies Society, Mayor's Youth Council Municipality of Chatham-Kent, Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit, and Dresden Christian Reformed Church an after-school program to teach children and youth good nutrition and meal/snack preparation.
Take 5: 5-10 a day…Your Way!
Take 5 is a community based behavioural intervention developed to inform, educate and stimulate behavioural changes related to fruit and vegetable consumption. It is designed to support women 25-45 to consume 5-10 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. The program is delivered over 6 consecutive weeks by a trained facilitator in partnership with Chatham-Kent Public Health, Ontario Works and the Canadian Cancer Society-Chatham-Kent Unit.
Physical Activity Programs
Start Walking
HLCK & the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit in partnership with Chatham-Kent Public Libraries and Parks & Recreation offered walking programs throughout the Municipality. The focus being to increase physical activity among residents of Chatham-Kent.
Pedometer Loan Program
HLCK & the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit in partnership with Chatham-Kent Public Libraries and Parks & Recreation offered a pedometer loan program throughout the Municipality. The focus being to increase physical activity among residents of Chatham-Kent.
I Can Bee Healthy
In partnership with the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit, St. Clair Catholic District School Board, Lambton-Kent District School Board, and Conseil Scolaire de District des Ecoles du Sud-Quest invites all members of the school community to participate in physical activity and nutrition program.
Yoga, You & Your Mom
HLCK will provide this 4 week program designed to motivate young women and their moms to increase their amount of daily physical activity. The program will highlight yoga as an exercise option that promotes total body wellness. In addition to building core strength and increasing flexibility, classes will also address nutrition, stress management and mental health. The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit will offer information on other types of physical activity such as walking and provide weekly healthy eating sessions by a registered dietitian during the course of the program.
