Genealogy at the Chatham-Kent Public Library |
 |
Genealogy is an activity that has become increasingly popular in the last few years, due to TV shows like CBC’s Who Do You Think You Are? and increasing online digital archives such as Ancestry.ca. More and more people have been taking up this activity as an enjoyable hobby, while others have dived into it with a passion.
With interest in family history growing, the Chatham-Kent Public Library staff is ready and equipped to help you get started in expanding your family tree.
The library has a wealth of local genealogical resources stored in its McKeough Local History Room with additional resources available in the next room at the Ontario Genealogical Society’s Kent Branch.
Both library staff and OGS volunteers are available to help you get started and to help make your family history search a little easier.

| Research Services |
The library also offers research services for those who are not able to access the archives in person.
Beginning January 1st, 2010, the cost for this service is increasing to $45.00/hour, with a minimum fee of $12.00, plus $1.00 for postage, and $0.25 per page for printouts.
When contacting us by email or regular mail, please provide any information you think will be helpful. Avoid asking general requests such as “Please provide any information you have on the Smith family,” or “I’m looking for information about Kent County’s railway history.” We are more likely to find useful information for you when information requests are limited and specific.
Wherever possible, limit requests to a particular individual, organization, or company, and specify the type of record you would like searched; for example, census records, newspapers, directories, cemetery records, etc.
Also, to avoid duplicated searches, please provide a summary of resources that you have already searched and the information that you have already discovered.
Our Local History Librarian will contact you with a search timeline, progress of the search, and final payment. |
