EDS links local manufacturer to goverment funding for lean practises...
Rob Van Alphen, Nu-Co Plastics
Chatham-Kent Economic Development Services is helping area manufacturers tap into government grants to become more efficient and increase their global competitiveness.
The Yves Landry Foundation recently awarded Chatham-Kent-based Nu-Co Plastics two grants worth close to $50,000 towards skills advancement and the development of a lean management program. Nu-Co President, Rob VanAlphen, says that Chatham-Kent Economic Development Services was instrumental in linking him to the grant, and assisting with the application process. “It’s nice that funding for these programs exists so that we can prepare for when the economy comes back … and have the systems in place so it is easier for us to take on more work.”
Nu-Co Plastics is working with a local consultant, an associate of
[advantage] Business Consortium (ABC), to develop a program that will reduce waste and make the firm even more cost-efficient, through lean processes. The consortium will guide the company for six months to help it reach its goals.
“Right now they’re helping us to review our entire operation to identify where we need to be more efficient,” says Van Alphen. “They (ABC) will continue to work with us to make sure that the ideas discussed are actually implemented and become part of our normal business operating procedures.”
“There is money available to help firms remain competitive, innovative and lean,” adds Lori Gall, Chatham-Kent Business Development Coordinator. “Our goal is to make local companies aware of available funding programs, and to help them attain funding that meshes with their business growth plans.” Firms interested in learning more about available funds, including the newly-announced FedDev Southern Ontario Development Program, should contact Gall by calling 519.351.7700 ext. 2042.
